Men and the Aging Process

men's aging

What is “normal aging” for men? Traditional Western Medicine has viewed decreased lean muscle mass, increased fat mass, increased insulin resistance, and decreased libido as just a normal part of men’s aging process.

In addition, although osteoporosis is more common in women, bone loss still affects many men and could be underdiagnosed. One in five men over the age of 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture. Although men start with a higher bone density, by their mid-sixties men and women lose bone mass at the same rate. Low levels of testosterone, not enough calcium or vitamin D, too much alcohol, taking certain drugs and smoking are risk factors for losing bone density and muscle mass.

An additional factor in men’s aging is that male hormone decrease is gradual throughout the aging process, which is very different then the rapid decrease seen by women as they age. Since the decrease is gradual, the subtle changes are less often addressed.

The Good News on Men’s Aging

The positive side is that studies have shown that supplementing testosterone in aging and older men can potentially protect patients from the adverse effects of aging.  Along with a comprehensive exercise program and healthy diet, Bioidentical Hormone Replacement can increase men’s lean muscle mass, improve cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, prevent and/or reverse Type 2 Diabetes, help lose fat, increase energy, mood and libido!
