Reducing Your Alzheimer’s Risk

Did you know that Alzheimer’s affects almost twice as many women as men. Experts have suggested that it’s because women tend to live longer than men do. But that’s not the entire picture. Other elements may include lifestyle factors such as stress as well as immune system functions.

“Kellyann Niotis, M.D., a preventative neurologist at Early Medical specializing in risk reduction strategies for neurodegenerative disorders, points to worsening brain health over time from the cumulative stress and responsibilities women juggle in life. Compared to men, women’s brains appear to be more susceptible to the damaging effects of the stress hormone cortisol.” (SheKnows)

How to Reduce Your Risk

  • Thirty minutes of moderate physical activity 5 days a week (150 minutes total) helps reduce inflammation and support brain plasticity. Don’t forget to add in muscle strengthening exercises.
  • Get enough sleep. The most important part of sleep are the later stages of deep restorative sleep. Deep sleep is needed to flush out toxins. Research has shown a link between lack of sleep and Alzheimer’s.
  • Eat an anti-inflammatory diet. Leafy green vegetables, fish and other lean proteins as well as olive oil can protect from inflammation and oxidative stress.
  • Challenge your mind. The brain is a muscle that needs workouts also. Games and puzzles can help with visual perception, long-term memory and problem-solving skills.
  • Build an emotional support system. Social isolation and loneliness can increase the risk for depression and dementia.
